Job Summary: 

Copper Roots is seeking a skilled and highly motivated senior protection and control Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have at least 12 years of experience in 12kV to 345 kV substation protection and control engineering, with a strong knowledge of protective relaying schemes, industry standards, and construction practices. 


Key Responsibilities: 

  • Support the development of Copper Roots’ substation engineering group including hiring, mentoring and developing a high-performing team. 
  • Define and develop design standards, procedures, and tools to support scalable and efficient project execution. 
  • Lead design and delivery of high-voltage substation projects for clients throughout the nation. 
  • Partner closely with leadership to align substation efforts with client and company goals. 
  • Serve as a technical leader and subject-matter expert for substation design and engineering. 
  • Drive a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the group. 
  • Effectively communicate, delegate, and lead team members to successfully execute projects. 
  • Coordinate with clients and other stakeholders on the status of the project. 
  • Provide technical support during bidding, procurement, and construction phases. 
  • Conduct site visits and work with field teams to ensure project success. 
  • Ensure overall quality of design tasks and project deliverables through adherence of quality procedures. 
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices in protection engineering. 
  • Foster a positive work environment and contribute to the knowledge growth of individuals and the team. 
  • Maintain existing and support the growth of potential new client relationships. 


Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. 
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) strongly preferred. 
  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in P&C design, with an emphasis on relaying. 
  • Advanced knowledge of various protection schemes and relays including transformer protection, line protection, breaker failure, cap bank protection, communication-based schemes, and differential protection.  
  • Proficiency with ASPEN Oneliner, ETAP, CAPE, CYME, PSSE, AcSELerator Quickset. 
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NESC, PRC, IEEE, etc.). 
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. 
  • Proficiency with MS Office software. 


Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience with system planning and studies a plus. 
  • Experience with cost estimating and scheduling.
