Job Summary:
Copper Roots is seeking a skilled and highly motivated lead substation engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have at least 6 years of experience in substation engineering with voltages ranging from 12kV to 345kV, with experience leading internal teams and building external relationships with clients. The candidate should be proficient in physical and/or electrical substation design with a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals, industry standards, and construction practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and manage project scope of work, schedule and budget.
- Develop and review substation general arrangement, equipment, foundation, conduit, and grounding layouts.
- Develop and review protection and control design including one line and three line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, equipment and panel wiring, and panel arrangements.
- Provide mentoring and technical oversight to junior level staff.
- Perform Calculations to support electrical and physical station design.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, including NEC, NESC, RUS, and IEEE.
- Effectively communicate, delegate, and lead team members to successfully execute projects.
- Coordinate with clients and key stakeholders on the design and status of the project.
- Prepare and issue material lists, engineering reports, cost estimates, and technical specifications.
- Provide technical support during bidding, procurement, and construction phases.
- Conduct site visits and work with field teams to ensure project success.
- Ensure overall quality of design tasks and project deliverables through adherence of quality procedures.
- Foster a positive work environment and contribute to the knowledge growth of individuals and the team.
- Maintain existing and support the growth of potential new client relationships.
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices in substation engineering.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited program.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in substation design.
- Proficiency with applicable design tools (Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Microstation, etc.).
- Knowledge of substation equipment sizing and specification.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NESC, RUS, IEEE, etc.).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with MS Office software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with cost estimating and scheduling.
- Experience in leading a project team.
- Track record in building and maintaining client relationships.
