A non-medical caregiver provides essential non-clinical support to seniors, individuals with disabilities, or those recovering from illness to help them live safely and independently at home. 

Core Responsibilities

Responsibilities are typically divided into physical assistance, household management, and emotional support: 

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): Assisting with personal hygiene tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
  • Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs): Managing "behind-the-scenes" needs like meal planning and preparation, grocery shopping, and light housekeeping (laundry, dishes, vacuuming).
  • Companionship: Providing emotional support through conversation, playing games, going on walks, and helping the client stay socially engaged to combat isolation.
  • Mobility & Safety: Supporting movement within the home, assisting with transfers (e.g., from bed to wheelchair), and identifying potential fall hazards like loose rugs.
  • Health Monitoring: While they do not administer medication, provide medication reminders and monitor for changes in the client’s physical or mental condition, reporting any concerns to family or medical staff.
  • Transportation: Driving clients to medical appointments, social outings, or for necessary errands. 

Common Job Requirements

  • Education: Most positions require a high school diploma or GED. Require caregivers to be at least 18 years old.
