Community Education Group (CEG) was founded on a mission to address the health, socio-economic, environmental, and systemic challenges facing the Black community through creating and enhancing community and peer-based outreach and service programs more than 30 years ago. As a Staff Accountant at CEG, you will follow generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) to perform routine financial and accounting tasks and be responsible for preparing reports, maintaining general ledgers, and keeping up with the company's payroll tax obligations. Your job duties will typically involve basic accounting tasks, but you may perform some higher-level functions in other areas as you gain more experience. 


As a Staff Accountant, your key responsibilities will include the following:

  • Maintain accounts receivable records including billing and cash receipts
  • Maintain accounts payable records including purchases and cash disbursements
  • Maintain vendor contract files, including W-9, and prepare annual 1099 forms
  • Investigate, follow-up and resolve issues with A/P and A/R
  • Verify and/or complete payment of invoice(s) associated with accounts payable and ensure payments are charged to the appropriate general ledger and cost center accounts and synchronized from vendor payment system to accounting software
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit card accounts, and other general ledger accounts monthly and resolve discrepancies
  • Review bank and credit card bank feeds and properly allocate expense to the appropriate vendor, general ledger account, cost center and tracking class
  • Monitor American Express credit card accounts and verify completion of monthly employee expense reports
  • Analyze and allocate payroll journal entries and expenses synchronized from employee management payroll system to accounting software
  • Reconcile benefits related to employee’ withholdings against monthly invoices
  • Reconcile and process retirement account remittances
  • Generate accounting and audit reports for cash receipts, accounts payable and receivable, expenditures, and profits and losses
  • Understand and review the budget and general ledger for assigned departments and accounts, ensuring that funds are available, and expenditures are assigned correctly
  • Assist with preparation of financial statements and records provided to Board of Directors, external auditors, and others as requested
  • Assist with completion of the organization’s 990 tax return
  • Assist with review of monthly and quarterly payroll tax reporting
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


As a Staff Accountant, your key skills will include the following:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (including business, etc.) from an accredited college or university
  • At least 5 years of accounting experience, including knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Uniform Guidance 2 CFR 200
  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit organization
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online accounting software
  • Understanding of how budgets are established
  • Attention to detail for finding inconsistencies in data and ensuring accuracy in financial statements
  • Focus and self-management to be able to work remotely
  • Organization and prioritization to work independently
  • Ability to exercise discretionary judgment with minimal direct supervision
  • Cultural humility, integrity, and respect for others
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in stressful and/or challenging conversations
  • A team-centered approach
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including with CEG team, stakeholders, and vendors

Preferred:

  • CPA or CPA candidate working towards certification

 

Position Type: Full-time, exempt, remote hours available 9 am - 6 pm (preferably in one of the 13 Appalachian states where CEG operates: AL, GA, KY, MD, MS, NC, NY, OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, WV).

 

Salary: $45,000-55,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
