Description

Position Overview

As a Technical Game Designer at Cold Symmetry, you'll join our multidisciplinary team as a hands-on implementer and problem-solver. This role is ideal for someone with strong technical skills in Unreal Engine who enjoys diagnosing issues, building and refining gameplay systems, and bridging the gap between design intent and working, polished gameplay. Your primary focus will be implementation, debugging, and iteration, especially in Unreal Blueprints and core gameplay systems.

We're looking for someone with solid Blueprint scripting ability, a strong grasp of how gameplay systems fit together technically, and a collaborative, detail-oriented mindset. Familiarity with Souls-like or Roguelike games is a strong plus.

We are a distributed studio and all of our positions are fully remote. We are considering candidates from anywhere in the world as long as you're really good at what you do. What matters to us is that you're competent, resourceful, take extreme ownership in your specialized area, and have a burning desire to get things done.

You’ll Own

  • General Gameplay & Technical Support
  • Collaborate with designers, programmers, and artists to diagnose and resolve gameplay bugs and design issues
  • Implement and refine existing systems using Unreal Engine and Blueprints
  • Take ownership of technical design tasks, from tuning combat behaviors to updating level scripting based on production priorities

  • Blueprint Implementation & Polish
  • Create, modify, and troubleshoot Blueprint scripts to improve gameplay systems and responsiveness
  • Assist with tuning game balance, player feedback, and mechanical clarity as the game moves toward finalization

  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
  • Act as a flexible technical contributor who can support encounter, systems, or gameplay implementation work as needed
  • Communicate clearly with team members across disciplines to help unblock issues and improve quality of life across the project

Your XP and Skills

  • Strong technical design experience in Unreal Engine, with a portfolio showcasing Blueprint work and gameplay implementation
  • Proficiency in Unreal Engine and demonstrated experience building complex Unreal Blueprint systems
  • Experience diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving gameplay bugs
  • Familiarity with level scripting and general gameplay systems implementation
  • Experience contributing to a game during late-stage development and through to post-launch support
  • Experience with or strong interest in challenging games, particularly Souls-like and Roguelike genres
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, as you'll be working closely with a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work autonomously, without micromanagement, while still delivering on goals and milestones
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently as part of a fully distributed, at-times-async team

Bonus Skills

  • Background in encounter or systems design.
  • Experience debugging complex Blueprint-based systems.
  • Familiarity with procedural content workflows.
  • Understanding of adjacent disciplines such as level or narrative design.

Portfolio Required for Consideration

Please include a work sample portfolio with your application. Applicants who include examples of their Blueprint work, along with an example of a combat-focused mechanic they've designed, will be given preference in the review process.

If your portfolio does not include these elements but you advance through the initial review based on your resume, you will be asked to complete a design test as part of the interview process.
