About CDI
The Climate Democracy Initiative (CDI) is a mission-driven nonprofit working at the intersection of climate action and democratic engagement.
The Opportunity
CDI is seeking a skilled communications professional to help us establish a communications and media management program focused on outreach to potential partners and collaborators, complete with a portfolio of storytelling for funders. This is a short-term, part-time contract engagement ideal for a hands-on communications practitioner who can both execute the work and help build durable infrastructure as we grow this capacity.
Engagement Terms
Engagement type: Independent contractor / consultant
Location: Fully remote and virtual
Hours: Part-time, up to 15 hours per week
Term: Up to 3 months, with the possibility of extension
Targeted Start date: September 7, 2026
Scope of Work
1. Support Program Development & Implementation — ~40% of time
- Contribute to program synthesis and some issue analysis
- Develop and refine messaging
- Support strategic planning: help assess needs and identify desired outcomes
- Help build and maintain internal programmatic infrastructure
- Recommend process and problem-solving improvements
2. Content Creation & Management — ~40% of time
- Manage and maintain the content calendar and tracking
- Edit and storyboard content, largely for social media
- Co-develop the quarterly newsletter
- Write promotional copy (primarily social posts and newsletter blurbs, some news releases)
- Apply storytelling best practices across channels
- Support website content updates and coordination
- Support presentation development
- Provide some speechwriting support
- Assist with facilitation and light conflict resolution
3. Media Management — ~20% of time
- Coordinate traditional and social media engagements (currently limited in volume)
- Build and maintain an engagement/contacts database
- Help coordinate the organization's media training and awareness efforts
Qualifications
- 5 years or more of experience in communications and public relations
- Familiarity with nonprofit and/or government operations preferred
- Proficiency with the Google suite of office applications; experience with Monday boards, Slack, and Canva. Ability to translate work into Apple and Microsoft products is a plus.
- Some cybersecurity awareness and an understanding of AI preferred
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage a content calendar and coordinate across a small team with limited supervision
