Part-Time Legal Assistant (Bankruptcy Practice)

About the Role
We are seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Legal Assistant to support our growing bankruptcy practice based in Roanoke, Virginia. This position is primarily work-from-home, offering flexibility while still maintaining a connection to the office. The selected candidate will be expected to visit the office several times per week to handle incoming and outgoing mail and complete certain in-person administrative tasks.
This role is ideal for someone who is organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently, with the opportunity to grow into a full-time position as the practice expands.
Key Responsibilities
- Answer incoming calls to schedule appointments
- Communicate with clients to collect documents and provide updates on their cases
- Monitor deadlines and ensure timely filings with the bankruptcy court
- Maintain and organize electronic files and documents
- Retrieve, sort, and process mail from the office multiple times per week
- Draft correspondence and routine legal documents
- Perform general administrative tasks, including scheduling and data entry
Qualifications
- Prior experience as a legal assistant or in an administrative role preferred
- Bankruptcy experience (Chapter 7 and/or Chapter 13) is a strong plus, but not required
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Empathy for working with individuals in difficult situations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office required (proficiency in case management systems such as Clio and Best Case a plus)
- Dependable transportation to visit the Roanoke office several times per week
- High level of professionalism and ability to handle confidential information
Work Schedule
- Part-time (approximately 18-20 hours per week, 3-4 days per week to start)
- Some schedule flexibility within office hours, with regular weekly trips to the office required
