The Opportunity
Cephable is an on-device productivity assistant that helps people control, create, and automate their work across personal and professional workflows. Built on universal-design principles, Cephable adapts to the way each person works best, and it does so privately: everything runs on the device, so a person's and a business's data is never processed in the cloud. We're a small, fast-moving team building category-defining software, and we go to market alongside the world's leading technology partners.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own and evolve Cephable's React/Electron desktop app. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role for a dynamic engineer who can move fluidly across the app — from UI to architecture to performance — and who wants to grow into deeper native and AI-adjacent work over time.
C++ and on-device AI experience are areas we're actively looking to strengthen on the team. If you have that background, it's a significant plus and an area where you'll have real room to contribute to native modules that bridge our on-device AI systems into the app. If you don't yet have that experience but are eager to grow into it, we still want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Application Development
- Design, build, and maintain features across our React/Electron desktop app
- Own the architecture and performance of the desktop application codebase
- Ensure consistent, accessible, high-quality UX
Native & AI Integration
- Contribute to native modules (C++, and Swift/Objective-C or Kotlin/Java as needed) that bridge JavaScript/TypeScript app code with on-device AI and system-level APIs
- Work closely with ML engineers to help expose on-device models — including llama.cpp-based inference — to the application in a performant, well-abstracted way
- Grow the team's native and AI-adjacent capabilities over time
Technical Leadership
- Lead code reviews and help set best practices for cross-platform development
- Identify systemic issues — technical debt, process gaps, recurring bugs — and lead efforts to address them at the root
- Communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to product, design, and non-technical stakeholders
- Mentor other engineers on native module development and cross-platform architecture as the team grows
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant time in React and Electron
- Strong TypeScript/JavaScript skills and solid understanding of desktop app architecture
- Demonstrated versatility — comfortable moving across UI, application architecture, and performance work
- Excellent communication skills — able to explain complex technical tradeoffs clearly to engineers and non-technical stakeholders alike
- Ability to use tools like claude code, codex, github copilot, etc to manage multiple workstreams at a time
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience writing native modules/bridges, particularly in C++
- Experience integrating local LLM inference runtimes into applications
- Experience debugging performance issues across the JS-to-native boundary
- Experience with React Native and native modules for iOS/Android (Swift/Objective-C, Kotlin/Java)
- Experience with on-device AI or ML-powered application features
- Familiarity with ONNX Runtime, GGUF model formats, or similar on-device inference tooling
- Experience shipping and maintaining desktop apps via Electron
- Background in accessibility-focused or assistive technology products
About the Team
You'll be joining a small, highly collaborative engineering team of six, working closely with the the CEO, Director of Engineering, Principal Architect, and our ML engineering function. This role sits at the intersection of application engineering and on-device AI — there's significant ownership available for someone who wants to shape how our apps and models work together.
Why Cephable
