The Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) seeks an experienced and versatile communications professional to craft and execute strategies that will support the organization’s work to advance state-level policies aimed at helping communities hold fossil fuel corporations accountable for deceiving the public about climate change and the resulting costs. 


This new position will work alongside CCI staff and other partners to generate strategic and compelling content that tells the story of Big Oil’s climate deception, explains the resulting costs to communities, and makes the case for climate accountability and justice. The ideal candidate will have experience serving in a communications role either in a state legislative office or at a nonprofit organization that engages in legislative advocacy work. 


A member of CCI’s communications department, the Communications Strategist, Legislative Affairs will be mostly remote with occasional travel and report to the Communications Director. CCI is an all-remote, nationwide organization, but preference may be given to candidates based in New York State. 


Key responsibilities:

  • State legislative communications strategy: Craft and execute communications strategies that will support CCI’s work to advance climate accountability policies in state legislatures across the country.
  • Collaboration and teamwork: Serve as a key member of CCI’s growing legislative advocacy team, working with colleagues and other stakeholders to develop strategic messaging and produce compelling communications content.
  • Writing and editing: Draft and edit a wide range of written materials, including but not limited to press releases, op-eds, talking points, fact sheets, social media content, and advocacy materials. 
  • Media relations: Build and maintain relationships with reporters covering key state legislatures, pitch news stories, coordinate rapid response, and prep spokespeople for interviews.
  • Rapid response: Coordinate timely responses to news and legislative developments. Monitor news coverage, social media feeds, and legislative calendars in key states to identify news hooks and communications opportunities. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 



Requirements: 

  • At least 3 years of experience as a communications staffer in a state legislative office or nonprofit organization that engages in legislative advocacy.
  • An understanding of state-level policymaking processes and a proven ability to navigate complex policy landscapes and collaborate with diverse stakeholders. 
  • Excellent writing, grammar, and copy editing skills, including ability to produce clean copy under tight deadlines and a demonstrated ability to convey complex concepts in clear and concise language.
  • Media relations experience, including drafting press statements, pitching news stories, prepping spokespeople for interviews, and building and maintaining relationships with reporters. 
  • Strong project management and time management skills. 
  • Experience managing multiple long- and short-term projects simultaneously with attention to detail and accuracy under tight deadlines.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with multiple staff and stakeholders across a remote, nationwide organization.
  • Sound editorial judgment.
  • Champions diversity and inclusion — Advocates the value of diversity and inclusion as a competitive advantage; works to actively support equitable team environments.


Strongly preferred:

  • Experience contributing to social media and/or video and graphic content creation. 
  • Familiarity with climate, environmental, legal, and/or corporate accountability advocacy. 
  • Knowledge of AP style. 
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus, but not required.
