Job Description:
The Packaging Lead is responsible for ensuring all products packaged for consumption meet the internal and external quality standards to which Castle Island Brewing Company (CIBC) adheres. In ensuring those standards are met, the Packaging Lead will be responsible for performing all applicable packaging standard operating procedures (SOPs), testing, quality monitoring, inventory monitoring, and inspection of all packaging materials in a timely and efficient manner
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years experience in beverage packaging. Familiarity with Wild Goose 250 Filler a plus
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work on your feet all day
Daily Responsibilities:
- Manage packaging assistant division of labor and arrival/end time
- Communicate with Vice President of Operations to determine accurate packaging splits
- Sanitize in place (SIP) and prepare canning line and keg filling lines for process
- Operate depalletizer (Depal)
- Operate 5-head canning line
- Manage filler conversion between 16oz, 12oz, and 19.2oz cans
- Clean in place (CIP) canning line and keg filling lines after process
- Clean and sanitize kegs as needed using 2-head keg washer to fulfill daily keg needs
- Obtain pre-packaging sensory approval from qualified QC (quality control) or production staff before each packaging run
- Regularly and accurately perform packaging QC checks such as:
- Keg washer cleaning/sanitizing chemical titrations
- Bright beer temperature, head pressure, and CO2
- Proper date code application
- Proper can label and keg collar application
- Seam checks
- Dissolved oxygen
- Manage packaging assistants to ensure packaging line is operating smoothly and efficiently
- Arrive at the facility on time and demonstrate efficient workmanship
- Handle pilot and R&D packaging tasks as needed
- Manage packaging area cleaning regimen to ensure all surfaces and floors are clean and organized
- Record and input batch packaging data in electronic tracking programs
- Record and input batch packaging material usage and volumes in enterprise resource programs
- Inspect all packaging materials to ensure they meet CIBC quality standards
- Adhere to the CIBC occupational compliance programs and procedures
- Communicate in a clear and timely fashion via email/text/phone, when necessary
- Operate pallet jack
- Operate scissor lift
- Operate forklift
Weekly Responsibilities:
- Manage incoming keg and pallet inventory
- Manage damaged pallet and keg inventory
- Manage dunnage
- Assist in managing can label inventory
- Participate in weekly sensory tastings
Annual Responsibilities:
- Review and update all packaging SOPs
- Identify all needed updates with QC Manager and Head Brewer
- Ensure all needed updates are made and communicated to applicable team members
- Ensure re-training of packaging assistants is conducted when necessary
Ongoing Responsibilities:
- Perform routine preventative maintenance on all packaging equipment
- Communicate packaging equipment maintenance needs to Head Brewer as needed
- Manage and monitor packaging material inventory such as:
- Trays
- PakTech
- Keg Collars
- Date coder ink
- Keg Caps
- Others as needed
- Validate new processes/practices.
- Manage and encourage efficient labor usage within department
- Perform necessary equipment calibration
- Interface with equipment vendors
- Assist in the development of all packaging SOPs with QC
- Assist in recipe development/special projects as needed
- Interface with contract brewing clients
- Interface with equipment and raw material vendors
- Perform weekend QC duties including, but not limited to: Rolec DH90 operation, pilot FV dry hopping, yeast dumps, etc., when required
- Attendance and participation in training and production meetings
- Validate new processes/practices
- Perform necessary equipment calibration
