The Staff Accountant is responsible for managing the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and accountability of all financial records. This role plays a critical part in supporting grant-funded programs by overseeing financial tracking, reporting, and compliance for funding sources such as HUD. The ideal candidate will have nonprofit accounting experience and a strong understanding of grant management and reporting requirements.

Description

Key Responsibilities 


General Accounting & Financial Management: 


  • Maintain accurate general ledger and financial records in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards. 
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes. 
  • Perform monthly bank and account reconciliations. 
  • Prepare and process payroll or coordinate with payroll providers. 


Grant & Program Accounting: 


  • Track and monitor grant expenditures to ensure compliance with funding requirements federal/state grants. 
  • Assist with prep and submit financial reports and reimbursement requests in a timely manner. 
  • Ensure proper allocation of expenses across programs and funding sources. 
  • Support program staff with budget tracking and financial reporting needs.

Financial Reporting & Budgeting: 


  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements. 
  • Assist with the development and monitoring of organizational and program budgets. 
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to leadership to support decision-making. 


Audit & Compliance: 


  • Assist with annual audits and preparation of IRS Form 990. 
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations and grant requirements. 
  • Maintain organized financial documentation for audits and monitoring visits. 


Collaboration & Support: 


  • Work closely with program staff to ensure alignment between financial processes and program operations. 
  • Provide guidance on financial policies and procedures. 
  • Support administrative and operational functions as needed. 


Other Duties: 


  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the organization’s financial health and operations.

Qualifications 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. 
  • Experience: 
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting. 
  • Experience with grant accounting and fund accounting strongly preferred. 
  • Technical Skills: 
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks an RAMP). 
  • Strong Excel and financial reporting skills.

Salary

$25 - $40 per hour
