Job Description:
Carbon Mapper is seeking a qualified Communications Specialist to help connect the organization's data and insights to the stakeholders capable of driving climate action. Reporting to the Director for Strategy and Partnerships, the Communications Specialist will help lead the development of communication strategies, create high-impact messaging, and carry out communication tactics for major campaigns and announcements, manage Carbon Mapper’s digital platforms, and help the organization to capitalize on other high-profile opportunities.
Duties & Responsibilities:

Work with consultants and other staff to establish, manage, and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that builds Carbon Mapper’s brand and advances the organization’s impact.
- Lead on developing and executing an editorial calendar to translate Carbon Mapper’s scientific and research findings and insights for external audiences, develop key messaging, and deliver regular communications to targeted audiences.
- Write and adapt science and research content for blog, email, webpages, and other mediums.
- Develop and update branded organizational assets such as presentations, brochures, and other materials.
- Lead on website content development and updates in collaboration with Carbon Mapper Directors.
- Build and foster collaborative relationships with Carbon Mapper staff and researchers, and our partners’ communication professionals and technical experts.
- Drive planning and execution of rollouts and content releases, alongside partners, consultants, and staff.
- Support media engagement with editors and reporters and build and sustain positive relationships with media.
- Manage Carbon Mapper’s social media platforms and develop social media content.
- Develop (or oversee the development of) assets such as videos, graphics, and animations that help to visualize the impact of Carbon Mapper data.
- Manage internal communications processes and approvals.
- Track and execute reports on key communications metrics.
- Develop targeted communications and reports for Carbon Mapper donors and Board of Directors.
- Support select events and conferences.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- 5-6 years of experience in a communications role preferably at an environmental, climate or earth science/research nonprofit or another mission-based research organization or institution.
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or a similar field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong track record of exceptional writing, editing, and messaging skills and a proven ability to effectively communicate complex scientific findings and concepts to broad audiences.
- Experience managing communications on digital data platforms including websites or other online resources.
- Experience managing content across social media platforms and strong skills using social media to strategically grow an audience.
- Self-starter able to develop comprehensive communication strategies and coordinate effectively with peers, partners and technical experts to execute all aspects.
- Ability to track key communications metrics, communicate key outcomes, and strategically adjust tactics based on data.

Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines, good interpersonal skills, and strong writing ability.

Salary range: $90,000-$110,000 full-time equivalent salary for Pasadena, California
Hours: This is a full-time salaried position as a Carbon Mapper employee (40 hours per week). You are expected to be available Monday through Thursday 9 am - 3 pm PT. The remaining time is flexible based on your assigned projects and deadlines. Some after hours and weekend work may be required to meet deadlines.
Location: Remote locations in the United States accepted. Carbon Mapper has a distributed team with both in-person and remote workers. All employees will attend regular in-person all-hands meetings (approximately 1-2 days per quarter). Some team members may meet in person more frequently depending on business needs. Local employees may request an assigned desk in the Carbon Mapper office if they prefer a hybrid remote and in-person work schedule.
