Job Summary
Responsible for transporting students or passengers safely and efficiently, and on-time transportation of Boys & Girls club members while adhering to all North Carolina and federal regulations. Drivers will work on average 2 hours per day. There may be occasions where they will work overtime to help cover field trips.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age. Minimum Education: High School Diploma
- Possess or can obtain a valid North Carolina Driver License to operate up to 15 Passenger Activity Bus.
- Possess or can obtain a valid Class B North Carolina commercial driver’s license before receiving a bus route. (Need to drive 45 or 72 passenger bus)
- Possess or can obtain a valid Passenger Endorsement (P) or School Bus (S). (Need to drive 45 or 72 passenger bus)
- Must maintain an acceptable NC driving record as outlined by NCDMV—license not suspended, disqualified, or revoked; no more than one conviction in the past year; no DUI/DWI convictions.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow printed and electronic maps, route descriptions, and directions.
- Successfully pass the Boys & Girls Club driving test with the VP of Safety & Sites.
- Meet vision standards (20/40 acuity in each eye, 70° peripheral vision, and color recognition).
- Knowledge of first aid, health standards, and hazards including the ability to administer CPR/First Aid.
- Possess or can obtain a CPR/First Aid certification.
- Ability to communicate with members and adults both written and verbally.
- Pass drug screen and clear criminal background and sex offender registry checks (ineligible if required to register).
- Excellent customer service and approach to members, parents, and staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)—Class A, B, or C—with "S" (school bus) and "P" (passenger) endorsements (or ability to obtain both).
- 2+ years of CDL driving experience; prior experience with school, city transportation, or activity preferred buses.
- Experience conducting pre-trip/post-trip inspections and performing basic vehicle maintenance (e.g., checking oil, air pressure).
- Strong communication, leadership, and safety awareness skills, plus physical ability to manage luggage or passenger assistance.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the school style/activity bus to transport students safely and on schedule, in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, policies, regulations, administrative codes, and transportation operation guidelines.
- Maintains safe driver standards by managing passenger behavior, ensuring safety during loading/unloading, obeying all traffic laws, and observing all mandatory safety regulations for buses including clearing the bus and evacuating members quickly in the event of an emergency.
- Report on time for routes and will need to give the VP of Safety & Sites 48 hours’ notice of any requested time off.
- Transport and discharges only authorized members and staff of BGC at authorized school or designated stop locations.
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections, to include, but not limited to – mechanical defects, adequate fuel levels, items left on bus, damages to bus interior, and any safety concerns.
- Exercises responsible for leadership; establishes and maintains effective communications with school officials, parents and BGC staff. Communicate professionally and calmly with members.
- Maintains discipline while members are on the bus, reporting undisciplined students to the proper authority.
- Keep the bus clean and free of any items which may present a safety issue, while ensuring all maintenance issues are communicated to supervisor.
- Attend and successfully complete all required meetings & training
- Is sensitive to the cultural, ethnic and religious views of the members and families served, and in the community and public contact.
Additional Information
- Certification Maintenance: Drivers must report any license suspensions or violations to both the employer and NCDMV within 30 days.
- Re-Certification & Training: Attend required annual in-service, and ongoing safety training.
- Preferred Asheboro resident.
Pay Rate
Starting pay rate is $20 per hour. $23 per hour with CDL.
