The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County (BGCSCC) supports local youth by providing safe spaces filled with enriching programs and caring adult mentors who foster a sense of belonging and connection. Our programs focus on academics, recreation, art, music, career exploration, health/wellness, and character development for youth ages 6-18.

REPORTS TO: Clubhouse Director 

SALARY RANGE: $18.25 - $22 per hour 

HOURS: 25-28 hrs/wk (1:00-6:00 pm typical hours) 

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Plans and implements teen programs and activities.


JOB SUMMARY: Engage and inspire young people to learn and grow to be responsible adults. Oversee the core programs of the Club for youth ages 11-18. Responsible planning, developing, and implementing high-quality programs and activities that are positive and engaging for teens of all identities, genders, and interest areas. Create and maintain a safe environment within the teen center. Must be able to monitor and evaluate situations quickly using good judgment, make decisions, and engage appropriately. Communicate with parents as necessary regarding behavior and Club activities.  


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Above all, the successful candidate for this position must be energetic, passionate, committed, and show up ready to positively engage with teen members every day.


Prepare Teens for Success 

1. Establish positive and meaningful relationships with the Club’s teen members. Provide guidance and role modeling.  Educate, promote, and develop self-esteem and positive behaviors. 

2. Plan, organize, and deliver daily, weekly, and monthly FUN and IMPACTFUL age-appropriate activities and programs that prepare youth for success, promoting the safety of members and quality in programs at all times. 

  • Oversee at least two dedicated teen programs (including but not limited to Torch Club, Keystone Club, SMART Moves, etc.)
  • Check bgca.net routinely for opportunities for teens 
  • Coordinate a range of college and career readiness activities (including but not limited to guest speakers, field trips to local career fairs, visits to nearby college campuses, etc.)
  • Promote and foster teen participation in all activities. 
  • Plan and supervise occasional teen nights. 


Recruitment & Marketing 

1. Ensure the visibility of the teen program throughout the community: 

  • Visit the middle and high schools weekly to promote Club events and activities. 
  • Post schedules of regular activities and flyers for special events. 

2. Attend and participate in school functions when appropriate. 

3. Promote and generate interest in Club membership by generating positive word-of-mouth for programs within the Club.  



Health & Safety 

1. Ensure a healthy, safe, clean, and organized environment, supervising members in program areas to ensure safety.  

2. Manage the Teen Center facility and ensure a productive work environment, maintaining an inventory of all program equipment and supplies in good order.  

3. Ensure club youth are utilizing equipment and supplies in a safe and respectful manner.  


Internal/External Communication 

1. Maintain ongoing communication with the Clubhouse Director:

  • Recommend modifications that respond to member needs and interests to the Program Director 
  • Inform the Clubhouse Director when supplies are needed 

2. Attend weekly staff meetings. 

3. Communicate regularly with parents, principals, teachers, and community partners regarding the needs of teen members.

4. Establish relationships with Teen Directors of nearby Clubhouses to foster program growth and collaborate on special events.


ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Must attend weekly staff meeting as well as 8 hours of continued educational training each year 

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE RECOMMENDED

  • College degree preferred, 1-2 years of post-secondary education or professional experience required.
  • Knowledge of youth development and the ability to identify student needs.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience planning and implementing high-quality, engaging programs for youth
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and motivate youth. Experience in safely organizing and supervising members in a high-energy environment, implementing kind and firm boundaries to manage problematic individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to communicate with professionalism and work collaboratively with others.
  • Ability to communicate with respect and honesty with members’ parents, working together to support youth towards achieving their goals or mitigating their challenges.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check, and completion of all required BGCA safety onboarding training. 
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications required within 90 days of hire.
