The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County (BGCSCC) supports local youth by providing safe spaces filled with enriching programs and caring adult mentors who foster a sense of belonging and connection. Our programs focus on academics, recreation, art, music, career exploration, health/wellness, and character development for youth ages 6-18.

Title: STEAM Coordinator

Department: Education-CA Street

Reports to: Clubhouse Director

Status: Non-exempt, 25-29 hours per week

Compensation: $18 - $19.50/hour

Benefits: 40 hours of paid sick leave per year; access to free after-school 

                                and out-of-school programs for your children

Schedule: Part-time; after-school hours, evenings, and occasional special events

Job Overview

The STEAM Coordinator is responsible for developing and leading engaging Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) programming for youth at the Boys & Girls Club. This position creates hands-on learning experiences that encourage curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and a passion for STEAM.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with young people, is enthusiastic about STEAM education, and can make complex concepts fun, accessible, and age-appropriate for a diverse group of youth.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, prepare, and facilitate engaging STEAM activities and enrichment programs for Club members. This involves developing hands-on projects involving science, technology, engineering, mathematics, robotics, coding, LEGO engineering, environmental science, and related STEAM topics.
• Adapt activities to meet the developmental needs and interests of youth aged 5-18.
• Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that encourages youth participation and creativity. Incorporate project-based learning, experimentation, problem-solving, and teamwork into programming.
• Introduce youth to STEAM careers, educational opportunities, and real-world applications of STEAM concepts.
• Ensure STEAM activities are conducted safely and that equipment is used appropriately. Maintain an organized inventory of supplies, equipment, and tech/instructional materials.
• Collaborate with other Club staff to integrate STEAM into broader youth-development programs.
• Track participation and assist with program evaluation and outcome reporting.
• Communicate effectively with Club leadership, staff, volunteers, parents/guardians, and community partners.
• Support special STEAM events, competitions, field trips, demonstrations, and family engagement activities as needed.
• Maintain appropriate supervision of youth and follow all Boys & Girls Club policies and youth-safety standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience working with children or youth in an educational, recreational, or community-based setting.
• Demonstrated interest or experience in STEAM education, activities, or programming.
• Ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with youth.
• Ability to plan and lead activities independently while working effectively as part of a team.
• Commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for all youth.

Preferred:

• Associate or bachelor's degree in education, STEAM, computer science, engineering, science, mathematics, or a related field.
• Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or facilitating STEAM activities.
• Experience with robotics, coding, makerspace activities, 3D printing, electronics, or other hands-on STEAM technologies.
• Experience working with Boys & Girls Clubs or other youth-serving organizations.
