Summer Learning Teacher 

Job Description 

Department: Programming 

Employment Status: Seasonal Part-Time 

Reports To: Clubhouse Director 

Pay Rate: $16.00- 22.00 per hour 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt 


Typical Schedule: Monday–Friday, approximately 8:00 AM–1:00 PM during Summer Camp; hours may vary slightly based on operational needs

The Youth Development Professional plays a vital role in delivering high-quality programming and fostering positive relationships with members at Boys & Girls Clubs of East Alabama. 


PRIMARY FUNCTION 

The Summer Learning Teacher is responsible for planning, implementing, and overseeing academic enrichment programming focused on Reading and Math. This includes leading the Summer Brain Gain program and Summer Adventure in Learning curriculum while tracking academic progress through pre- and post-assessments. The Teacher ensures structured, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support measurable academic improvement. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Academic Instruction & Program Implementation 

  • Plan and implement structured Reading and Math instruction aligned with Summer Brain Gain and Summer Adventure in Learning 
  • Deliver small-group and whole-group instruction primarily for youth in 5th grade and below 
  • Adapt instruction to meet varying academic skill levels 
  • Create engaging, hands-on learning experiences that reinforce core academic skills 
  • Support literacy development, comprehension, and foundational math skills 

Assessment & Data Management 

  • Administer pre- and post-tests to measure student growth 
  • Collect, organize, and analyze academic data 
  • Provide regular progress updates and summary reports to the Clubhouse Director 
  • Ensure data is accurately documented and submitted in a timely manner 
  • Support outcome tracking aligned with organizational academic goals 

Classroom Environment & Youth Engagement 

  • Maintain a structured, positive, and inclusive learning environment 
  • Implement classroom management strategies consistent with organizational policies 
  • Encourage active participation and foster academic confidence 
  • Promote a culture of curiosity, respect, and achievement 

Safety & Compliance 

  • Ensure all youth protection policies and supervision standards are followed during instructional time 
  • Maintain appropriate staff-to-youth ratios in coordination with program leadership 
  • Immediately report any incidents, injuries, or safety concerns according to established procedures 
  • Participate in required safety trainings and uphold all child abuse prevention standards 
  • Support emergency preparedness procedures and drills 

Collaboration & Communication 

  • Communicate academic progress and concerns to the Clubhouse Director 
  • Collaborate with program staff to align academic instruction with broader summer programming 
  • Support integration of academic activities into overall camp structure 

Administrative & Operational Support 

  • Maintain organized lesson materials and classroom space 
  • Assist with attendance tracking during academic programming 
  • Support special academic events or family engagement opportunities as needed 
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of program and organizational needs

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field preferred (or currently pursuing degree) 
  • Teaching certification preferred but not required 
  • Experience working with elementary-aged students 
  • Strong knowledge of foundational Reading and Math instruction 
  • Experience administering assessments and interpreting academic data 
  • Strong classroom management skills 
  • Ability to engage diverse learners in a structured yet supportive environment 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Basic computer skills and comfort with data entry 

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Work occurs primarily indoors 
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, and active engagement with students 
  • Ability to lift light classroom materials and supplies 

BACKGROUND & COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS 

All candidates must successfully pass a criminal background check upon hire and annually thereafter, submit a Child Abuse & Neglect (CAN) Form, and comply with all Boys & Girls Clubs of America training, screening, and hiring requirements.
