The Associate Venture Partner, Oncology will drive the identification and development of oncology-focused therapeutics and platforms.

Description

Blackbird Laboratories is a non-profit biotechnology development platform launched in 2023 in Baltimore with the mission of creating new medicines and enabling technologies to address unmet medical needs. We also seek to amplify the innovation ecosystem in Baltimore via collaborations with Johns Hopkins University (JHU), University of Maryland (UMB), and other centers of research excellence. We are looking to add an experienced professional to our team to serve as an Associate Venture Partner to drive the identification and development of oncology-focused therapeutics and platforms.


Responsibilities:


  • Play a key role in identifying and initiating new oncology-focused therapeutic programs, leveraging the resident knowledge at JHU, UMB, and other centers of innovation
  • Develop technical project plans and resource plans/projections, supported by a cross-functional team of program management and decision support colleagues
  • Oversee the execution of preclinical drug discovery programs in collaboration with academic founders/collaborators and contract research partners
  • Play a key role in developing downstream business plans and pitch decks to support spin-out financing of successful programs
  • Interface with potential investors and assist in securing seed stage capital of spin-outs
  • Serve as interim executive management for Blackbird-incubated spin-outs
  • Reports to the CEO


Qualifications:


  • Advanced degree(s) in chemistry, biology, pharmacology or related field
  • 5+ years of work experience required, including leadership experience in an oncology-focused biopharma or biotech
  • Deep experience in oncology preclinical drug discovery (must-have); experience in submitting data packages required for regulatory filings (e.g. IND submission)
  • Understanding of high-value therapeutic areas/modalities within the field of oncology drug development
  • Track record of success working with angel investors, venture capitalists, and/or other sources of start-up funding
  • Demonstrated ability to merge technical and strategic considerations to drive oncology therapeutics programs forward
  • Demonstrated team- and project-level leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a cross-functional environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in contemporary professional computer applications (e.g., PowerPoint, Excel)
  • Independent, energetic, and community-minded


Timing & Location:


  • Start date on or before January 1st, 2024
  • Will consider remote work with travel to Baltimore 1x/quarter (for outstanding candidates)
