Job Type: Full-time/Non-exempt


Position Summary:

The Construction Assistant will support the Construction Superintendent, Home Services Manager, and Project Managers in completing new residential construction projects as well as home repair and neighborhood beautification projects. BHAHFH is frequently joined by volunteer labor and this position also provides on-site guidance and supervision to our volunteers. This applies to work with new construction as well.


Responsibilities:

  • Complete construction tasks in a timely manner as assigned by Project Managers while working alongside, and providing guidance to, volunteer labor. This could include everything from setting concrete forms through finished trim work
  • Follow all routine maintenance procedures and schedules for all equipment and tools
  • Represent Habitat for Humanity and its mission at all times through patience, kindness, hard work, and professionalism
  • Ensure jobsites are always clean, safe and professional
  • Follow, champion and promote all safety guidelines and regulations
  • Assist with loading and unloading of materials for jobs, securing and storing tools, and various miscellaneous tasks as will be assigned from time to time.


Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience in construction or a related manual labor profession
  • Familiarity with construction tools, materials and processes
  • Able to drive pick-up truck with tool trailer
  • Able to take direction and move from task to task as needed to complete work on agreed deadlines both independently and in collaboration with others
  • High-energy, outgoing, can-do personality who will strive for excellence in their work utilizing a high level of timely follow through, a keen attention to detail, and excellent communication skills
  • Motivated by serving others, and exhibits integrity in all situations


Education Requirements:

  • A level of competence and knowledge similar to that gained through achieving a high school diploma or equivalent


Required Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to work in multiple work environments, including heat and cold, climbing ladders and working on roofs, able to work on scaffolding, sitting at a desk or standing
  • Stand for long periods of time
  • Read rulers and view details in construction from a reasonable distance
  • Bend, squat, twist and kneel frequently
  • Utilize one, or two hands to grip, and assemble objects
  • Reach overhead for prolonged periods of time
  • Must be able to frequently lift, drag, and pull 50 pounds or more and occasionally lift, pull, or push 100 pounds or more
  • Ability to hear verbal instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate instructions in both writing and verbally to volunteers who primary speak English


Other Requirements:

  • A valid, unrestricted South Dakota driver's license
  • Ability to provide documentation to complete an I-9


Salary

$17 - $25 per hour
