Black Heart Association is seeking trained healthcare professionals to support Deployed Hearts, our on-demand community health screening program. Contractors provide blood collection and screening support at community-based events outside of traditional clinical settings. This role requires the ability to perform venipuncture and/or capillary blood collection (fingerstick) and to engage community members using BHA-approved, non-diagnostic language. All services are delivered under BHA protocols and within the contractor’s legal scope of practice.

Scope of Services

Contractors may perform:


  • Venipuncture
  • Capillary blood collection (fingerstick)

Services are limited to approved screenings and specimen collection only.


Key Responsibilities

Contractors are responsible for:


  • Performing blood collection and approved health screenings at community events
  • Properly labeling, handling, and preparing specimens for laboratory shipment
  • Setting up and breaking down screening areas using BHA-provided equipment
  • Following all infection control, safety, and biohazard protocols

Contractors must also clearly explain screenings to participants using BHA-approved language, including:


  • What the screening is
  • Why it matters
  • How the screening is performed
  • What happens to the sample
  • How and when results will be shared

Additional responsibilities include:


  • Directing participants to follow-up resources as outlined by BHA
  • Using the Deployed Hearts mobile app for job acceptance, navigation, check-in, and check-out
  • Representing Black Heart Association with professionalism, compassion, and respect in all community interactions

Important Boundaries

Contractors do not:


  • Interpret screening results
  • Diagnose medical conditions
  • Provide medical advice or treatment recommendations

All medical interpretation and follow-up guidance is handled through designated clinical protocols and medical oversight.


Required Qualifications

Applicants must be trained and authorized to perform venipuncture and/or capillary blood collection, demonstrated by one of the following:


  • Active Phlebotomy Certification, or
  • Licensed healthcare credential where blood collection is part of formal education and scope of practice, including but not limited to:
  • Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse (LPN/LVN)
  • Nurse Practitioner (NP)
  • Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Medical Assistant (MA) with documented training

Additional requirements include:


  • Valid professional license(s), if applicable
  • Valid driver’s license and active auto insurance
  • Reliable personal vehicle (contractors use their own vehicles)
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Comfort working in diverse community environments
  • Ability to lift and transport screening equipment
  • Strong communication skills and professionalism

Compensation

  • $20 per hour (flat base rate across all credentials)
  • Average event length: 4–8 hours
  • Mileage reimbursement provided
  • Paid per event

Additional Compensation

Solo coverage at high-volume events may qualify for volume-based pay adjustments when participant counts exceed standard thresholds.

Any additional compensation is:


  • Calculated automatically
  • Displayed inside the Deployed Hearts mobile app

Compensation is based on scope of work and level of responsibility, not professional title.


Schedule & Availability

  • On-demand scheduling through the Deployed Hearts mobile app
  • Contractors may accept or decline events
  • Primary workday: Saturday
  • Sunday events will be added as the program expands

Training & Activation

Before activation, contractors must complete:


  • BHA-approved screening language training
  • CARE & No CAP standards overview
  • Safety, compliance, and protocol review

Contractor Assessment Requirement

All applicants must successfully complete the Deployed Hearts Contractor Assessment as part of the approval process.

This assessment verifies understanding of screening protocols, communication standards, and safety procedures.

Salary

$20 - $20 per hour
