Full-Time | $50,000–$60,000 + Healthcare Stipend, PTO, Competition Travel & Family Membership 

Help Build the Future of Climbing in Central Texas 

Basin Climbing & Fitness is seeking a Head Routesetter & Competitive Team Head Coach to lead two of the most important parts of our business: the climbing experience on the wall and the development of our athletes. 

Located in the Greater Waco area, Basin is the region's only indoor climbing gym and serves a growing community of recreational climbers, youth athletes, and competitive team members from across Central Texas. 

This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who enjoys building programs, developing people, and creating exceptional climbing experiences. You'll oversee all routesetting operations, lead a team of assistant setters and coaches, and guide the growth of our competitive USA Climbing program. 

About the Role 

The Head Routesetter & Competitive Team Head Coach is responsible for the quality, safety, creativity, and strategic direction of both routesetting and athlete development at Basin. 

You'll work closely with gym leadership while maintaining ownership of your department's day-to-day operations, staff development, programming, and performance. 

Routesetting Responsibilities 

  • Lead all routesetting strategy, planning, quality control, and safety oversight 
  • Design and set boulders, top rope routes, and lead routes across all ability levels 
  • Create a balanced climbing experience across grades and movement styles 
  • Manage route rotations and reset schedules 
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and lead assistant routesetters 
  • Oversee hold inventory, equipment, and routesetting budgets 
  • Maintain industry safety standards and best practices 
  • Lead setting efforts for competitions, leagues, and special events 
  • Effectively set and forerun V8 and 5.13 climbs 

Competitive Team Coaching Responsibilities 

  • Lead Basin's USA Climbing competitive team program 
  • Develop athlete progression pathways from developmental through competitive levels 
  • Design training plans and seasonal programming 
  • Lead practices and coach athletes during competitions 
  • Recruit, train, and mentor assistant coaches 
  • Monitor athlete development, performance, and retention 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for team athletes and families 
  • Support a positive, challenging, and athlete-centered culture 

Leadership & Operations 

  • Manage schedules, staffing plans, and departmental budgets 
  • Work collaboratively with gym leadership, front desk staff, marketing, and facility operations 
  • Support clinics, camps, competitions, and community events 
  • Maintain operational systems, documentation, and standards 
  • Help shape the long-term vision of climbing and athlete development at Basin 

About the Program 

Basin currently serves more than 40 youth athletes across developmental and competitive programs, with a growing pipeline of climbers entering USA Climbing events. Athletes have advanced through qualifiers and regional competitions, and the program continues to grow each season. 

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of climbing in Central Texas while helping develop the next generation of athletes. 

Qualifications 

Required 

  • 3+ years of commercial routesetting experience 
  • Experience coaching youth or competitive climbers 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills 
  • Ability to safely work at height 
  • Ability to effectively set and forerun V8 and 5.13 climbs 

Preferred 

  • USA Climbing coaching experience or certifications 
  • Competition routesetting experience 
  • CPR/First Aid certification 
  • Work-at-height certification 
  • Experience leading teams and developing staff
