What You’ll Do

As an Education Counselor is responsible for bridging the gap between mental health treatment at BasePoint and educational continuity for clients. This position ensures that adolescent clients maintain academic progress while receiving mental health services throughout the treatment process. Academic history will be collected from the client and guardian at the time of admission. The liaison will then be responsible for creating an education plan with the client and family. This plan will help determine the best academic option for the client. It will be the responsibility of the Education Counselor to educate the family on best suited academic options and will help navigate the registration and/or transition process to continue school during treatment. Progress will be tracked during treatment, and communication will be necessary between all parties to ensure school assignments and tasks are completed during treatment. They will plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences and identify and select different resources that will meet students varying needs. Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and manage student behaviors in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.


JOB RESPONSIBITIES:

  • Acts as a liaison between BPA, families, Charter, and community educational partners to ensure patients receive the educational component of treatment.
  • Assist with continued school enrollment or enrollment into a new academic placement (Charter)
  • Coordinates with school districts and school counselors regarding individual educational needs, including Charter.
  • Provides appropriate and timely feedback to parents, schools, and patients regarding educational needs.
  • Employs appropriate crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as required and according to policy and procedure.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the program and protocol (policy and procedures) guidelines.
  • Comply with the established policy and procedure requiring a safe, clean and therapeutic environment.
  • Develop an educational plan for the student while they are enrolled in BasePoint.
  • Coordinate services with the student’s school district to ensure the student’s academic success while enrolled in BPA.
  • Support the client and family in navigating school systems (i.e 504 and IEP plans)
  • Collaborate with client and educational community partners to create a Back to School Plan, helping support the transition back to a traditional school environment if applicable.
  • Notify school of transition plans and schedules
  • Discuss with the clinical team any concerns with students’ educational needs.
  • Discuss with the Director of Academics & Vocational Services any concerns with specific academic needs.
  • Assist with milieu management as needed, to include front office coverage, check-in/out process, line of sight, dismissal and administrative duties as required.

  • Understanding of trauma-informed practices.
  • Ability to maintain record-keeping systems.
  • Ability to make effective procedural decisions and recommendations.
  • Familiar with IEP and 504.
