POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Director of Business Development—Education serves as a senior leader on the corporate development team responsible for translating organizational revenue strategy into operational growth initiatives that expand the organization’s oncology education and partnership portfolio. This role provides leadership across partnership development, funder engagement, and revenue-generating initiatives that support impactful, mission-aligned educational programs and long-term funding sustainability.

Working in close collaboration with the Vice President, Corporate Development, the Director advances strategic partnerships with industry, foundations, and aligned organizations while ensuring development activities are integrated with programmatic priorities and organizational growth objectives.


This role is responsible for building the development pipeline, supporting partnership strategy, and cultivating external relationships. The Director ensures that partnership opportunities are evaluated strategically, structured effectively to drive impact, and executed in alignment with organizational mission, member priorities, and revenue goals.


The position functions as a senior operational leader responsible for advancing partnership growth, strengthening funder relationships, and ensuring development activities support sustainable expansion of the organization’s education portfolio.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities listed below represent the primary functions of the role and include, but are not limited to, the following.


Strategic Partnership & Revenue Growth

  • Support execution of the organization’s revenue development strategy in alignment with enterprise priorities and growth objectives.
  • Identify and evaluate partnership opportunities with industry, foundations, healthcare organizations, and aligned stakeholders.
  • Develop partnership strategies that translate organizational priorities into fundable initiatives and collaborative programs that deliver mutual value
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to align partnership development with education programming, research initiatives, and organizational strategy.
  • Monitor healthcare, oncology, and nonprofit funding trends to inform business development priorities.


Education Development

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with corporate partners, funders, and industry stakeholders supporting educational and programmatic initiatives.
  • Lead development of collaborative program concepts and well formulated proposals
  • Manage negotiations and partnership agreements in collaboration with organizational leadership.
  • Ensure education activities reflect mission alignment, transparency, and measurable impact.


Development Pipeline Management

  • Establish and manage the organization’s partnership development pipeline, ensuring consistent identification and progression of funding opportunities.
  • Track and report on partnership activity, revenue projections, and pipeline performance metrics.
  • Implement systems and processes supporting partnership development, stewardship, and reporting.
  • Monitor funding diversification efforts and identify opportunities to expand the organization’s revenue base.


Cross-Functional Program Alignment

  • Collaborate with Education, Marketing, Membership, and Editorial teams to ensure development initiatives align with program priorities and operational capacity.
  • Guide internal teams in structuring fundable program concepts that align with funder interests and organizational mission.
  • Support development of innovative education initiatives designed to expand program reach and sustainability.


Leadership & Team Development

  • May supervise and mentor business development staff responsible for partnership cultivation and program funding.
  • Provide strategic direction, coaching, and performance oversight for development team members.
  • Foster a collaborative team environment supporting professional growth and effective partnership engagement.
  • Support succession planning and capacity-building within the business development function.


External Engagement & Organizational Representation

  • Represent the organization in meetings with partners, funders, and external collaborators.
  • Participate in conferences, advisory boards, and industry forums to identify partnership opportunities, stay ahead of trends, and strengthen organizational visibility.
  • Serve as a key ambassador for the organization’s educational mission and partnership initiatives.

  • Ability to represent the organization credibly with partners, funders, and senior stakeholders.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.

·       Demonstrated experience in medical or health sciences education business development, with a strong understanding of continuing education (CE) and non-CE program development in a healthcare or nonprofit setting preferred.

·       Minimum of eight (8) to ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in partnership development, revenue development, nonprofit fundraising, and/or strategic program development.

·       Proven track record of securing and stewarding funding from industry and other mission-aligned partners, with the ability to successfully align funder priorities with organizational goals.


Preferred:

  • Experience working with healthcare, oncology, or medical education organizations.
  • Experience working with pharmaceutical or healthcare industry partners.
  • Experience within nonprofit associations or mission-driven organizations.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Remote work environment requiring sustained computer use and virtual collaboration.
  • Travel required as outlined above.

 

COMPENSATION DISCLOSURE

The base salary range for this position is $120,000 to $180,000 annually. In addition to the base salary, this position is eligible for sales commission and incentive compensation tied to revenue performance, partnership growth, and achievement of established business development goals.


This commission opportunity is in addition to the posted base salary range and provides the potential for significant additional earnings for high-performing candidates, including accelerators for exceeding target performance metrics.


Total compensation will vary based on experience, qualifications, and individual revenue results.
