The Assistant Coach at the Asheville Archery Training Center (AATC) is a vital role in fostering the growth and development of beginner and intermediate Olympic Recurve archers. Position Overview

The Assistant Coach at the Asheville Archery Training Center (AATC) is a vital role in fostering the growth and development of beginner and intermediate Olympic Recurve archers. This role involves leading group classes, private lessons, and intermediate practices, promoting the sport, and supporting archers in achieving their goals using the shot technique taught by esteemed coaches Alexander Krilov and Robert Park.

The ideal candidate is passionate about coaching, has strong communication and technical skills, and is committed to promoting a positive and supportive environment for archers of all ages and skill levels.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Coaching and Instruction
  • Lead beginner and intermediate Olympic Recurve archery groups using the Krilov and Park shot techniques.
  • Teach hour-long beginner group classes based on availability.
  • Provide private lessons for beginner and intermediate archers.
  1. Program Support
  • Maintain the safety and order of the archery range during practices and lessons.
  • Update and manage the outdoor signage with new program announcements.
  • Promote beginner lessons and AATC through social media, class announcements, and flyers.
  1. Event and Competition Involvement
  • Attend and coach at recommended competitions, including the NC State Competition (January and June) and Nationals in Harrisonburg.
  • Support archers in preparing for and participating in competitions.
  1. Leadership and Mentorship (Optional/Preferred)
  • Step in for the Head Coach during team practices when needed.
  • Organize and/or lead summer camps based on personal availability.
  • Train and mentor Junior Coaches (ages 15–18) to co-lead and lead classes.

Skills and Qualifications

  1. Coaching Skills
  • Proficient in teaching an Olympic Recurve Standard shot based on the Krilov method.
  • Ability to give constructive feedback, motivate archers, and help them improve their technique.
  1. Technical Skills (Training Available)
  • Build arrows, tune bows, and construct strings.
  • Maintain archery equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  1. Interpersonal Skills
  • Build rapport and foster a positive, inclusive community for archers and their families.
  • Communicate effectively with archers, parents, and other coaches in both group and individual settings.
  1. Safety and Certification Requirements
  • Maintain a safe range environment during all practices and lessons.
  • Hold a minimum of USA Archery Level 1 Instructor Certification (Level 2 preferred).
  • AATC offers Level 1 and Level 2 certification courses and requires a range pass (including SafeSport and a background check through USA Archery).

Compensation

  • Group Classes:
  • Level 1 Instructor: $17/hour
  • Level 2 Instructor: $20/hour
  • Private Lessons: $30/hour

Assistant Coaches are independent contractors and receive a 1099 form for tax purposes.

Who is AATC?

The Asheville Archery Training Center (AATC) is a competition-focused archery club with a mission to develop elite archers in a supportive, holistically-minded environment. Our approach emphasizes technical skill, mental focus, and personal development, fostering a love for archery and confidence that extends beyond the sport.


We welcome members from age 8 to adults, with most team members aged 11–18 and a diverse intermediate group including youth and adults. Our small club thrives through the dedication of volunteers, parents, and coaches who collectively maintain the facility, organize events, and foster a vibrant archery community.
