Classification: Part-time Asbury Excluding Benefits / Hourly Non-Exempt

Typical Weekly Hours: 10 hours (Sunday mornings and one weekday evening, plus some prep).

Position Summary: The Special Needs Classroom Lead will provide oversight for the Pre-K and Young Elementary Special Needs Ministry classroom during Sunday morning services and on one additional weeknight. This role will help provide a safe, structured, and welcoming environment where every child can learn about God's love while receiving individualized support that meets their unique developmental, communication, sensory, and behavioral needs. The Classroom Lead will work alongside trained volunteers to implement routines, adapt lessons, encourage participation, and foster meaningful relationships with children and their families.

This individual should be compassionate, dependable, and engaging, with experience in special education, behavior support, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or early childhood special education.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Create a welcoming environment where every child feels valued, safe, and included.
• Adapt provided Bible lessons, crafts, games, and activities to meet a variety of developmental levels and learning styles.
• Implement individualized behavior support strategies using positive behavior supports and proactive interventions.
• Support children with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, sensory processing differences, and other developmental disabilities.
• Coach, train, and direct classroom volunteers in effective strategies for supporting children with diverse needs.
• Build positive relationships with families and communicate professionally regarding each child's participation, successes, and support needs.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of every child by following church safety policies and procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families while demonstrating Christ-like compassion and professionalism.

 

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree (or currently pursuing) in Special Education, Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Development, or a related field
• Experience working with children with disabilities in schools, clinics, childcare settings, churches, or community programs
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Registered Behavior Technician (RBT)

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Has an active and growing Christian faith and demonstrates a lifestyle that reflects biblical values.
• Has a love for children with disabilities and their families.
• Knowledge of behavior management strategies, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and positive behavior supports
• Familiarity with autism spectrum disorder, sensory processing differences, AAC devices, visual supports, social-emotional development, and inclusive practices
• Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible during challenging situations
• Possesses characteristics of dependability, punctuality, organization, collaboration, and creativity.
