Epidemiologist/Data Analyst/Writer, Arundel Metrics, Inc.

Arundel Metrics, Inc. (AMI) is a public health research and analytics firm that excels at analyzing and presenting complex data.  We create insights for our clients through the analysis, interpretation, and visualization of complex health, economic and social data. We have been the data people behind America's Health Rankings® for the last 32 years. America's Health Rankings Annual Report, America's Health Rankings Senior Report, and America’s Health Rankings Health of Women and Children Report present relative rankings of state health and are used by numerous organizations and government entities for goal and strategy setting. The report is distributed nationwide and reported in local and national print and electronic media. AMI gathers and analyzes secondary data to write and publish these three reports annually and is responsible for content on America's Health Rankings® website. 


AMI has a full-time opportunity for a highly motivated person to join our organization to help prepare the above reports and contribute to other projects. Job responsibilities include identifying relevant health metrics and their respective data sources, collecting, analyzing and managing data, and summarizing the data and relevant literature in written formats. The role is a mix of analytical data scientist and data storyteller. This role is 100% remote. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Data analysis: Collect, analyze, interpret and manage data from secondary data sources and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Data storytelling: Create compelling written and visual stories using findings from secondary data analysis.
  • Data visualization: Develop polished data visualizations, including tables, graphs, and maps for the web, slide decks, and social media.
  • Client and outside stakeholder support: Critically review press releases, op-eds, short stories, tweets, and other collateral prepared by clients and external team members for accuracy and alignment with the data and reports. Respond thoughtfully to external data inquiries. 
  • Maintain public health knowledge : Develop and maintain an informed awareness of important developments in public health and continued education in data analysis and visualization tools. 
  • Opportunity identification and exploration: Brainstorm with the team and help identify new opportunities to make unique contributions to the public health space.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public health or related field.
  • Experience in statistical methods, programs, analysis and modeling, and database management using statistical software such as R, or other analysis and database software packages. Competence in Excel.
  • Excellent writing skills and verbal communication skills sufficient to communicate clearly with internal and external stakeholders, including general and non-public health audiences.
  • Experience identifying and extracting information from a variety of sources and producing clear, concise analysis and reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and excel independently with a strong desire to support, collaborate, and problem-solve alongside colleagues (in a remote work environment). 
  • Organized, responsive, and demonstrated ability to self-manage activities with the ability to adapt and adjust to changing priorities. 


Preferred Qualifications

  • Performing and communicating quantitative analysis, survey analysis, statistical modeling and/or program evaluations.
  • Two or more years of experience communicating public health data in a population health, epidemiologic, or health research setting. 
  • Knowledge of programming language SQL. 
  • Knowledge of data visualization and design tools (e.g., Python, R, Tableau, etc.) and trends. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English language), especially with general and non-public health audiences.
