Advisory Board Member - Volunteer Description

Ambitious Single Mothers, Inc

Position Title: Advisory Board Member

Reports To: Board of Directors

Term: At minimum 2 years


Position Overview:

As an advisory volunteer board member of ASM, Inc you will assist with overseeing the strategic direction, governance, and financial health of the organization. The role is essential for ensuring the long-term success of the organization, and you will be expected to participate actively in board meetings, contribute your expertise, and provide guidance to the executive leadership team.

This position is voluntary, and while it does not include financial compensation, it offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the community and the organization’s mission.


Key Responsibilities:

Meetings & Committees:

  • Attend regular board meetings (typically [insert frequency, e.g., quarterly, monthly]) and participate in relevant board committees, such as the finance, audit, or governance committees.
  • Prepare for meetings by reviewing materials provided in advance.
  • Provide feedback and constructive input during meetings.


Evaluation & Accountability:

  • Actively participate in evaluating the organization's performance, ensuring the board’s effectiveness and the alignment of operations with the organization’s goals.
  • Participate in the board’s self-assessment and help set future goals for board development.


Ethical Conduct:

  • Uphold the highest ethical standards in all actions, demonstrating integrity and transparency in all decisions.
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest and recuse yourself from decisions that may create a conflict.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in specific areas of community engagement and partnership, legal/policy and governance, fundraising and development, program and client impact.  
  • Proven leadership and governance experience, particularly in nonprofit or organizational settings. (preferred)
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team and participate in group decision-making processes.
