Position Summary

We are seeking a Utility Backfill Equipment Operator to provide on-call equipment operation for gas, water, and related underground utility construction projects.

This position provides qualified equipment operation based on project workload, customer requirements, and operational needs. Work is offered project by project. There is no guaranteed minimum number of hours, days, projects, or assignments.

The employee must successfully complete and maintain all company, utility, safety, and operator qualification requirements for assigned work. This includes applicable NV Energy qualification requirements when performing gas-related backfill work.

Responsibilities

• Operate backhoes, excavators, loaders, compactors, and other construction equipment for assigned utility work, when trained and authorized.
• Perform equipment-based excavation, trenching, grading, backfill placement, and compaction as assigned.
• Place and compact backfill materials according to project specifications, utility standards, and inspector direction.
• Coordinate equipment operation with laborers and other crew members, including following spotter direction.
• Protect installed and existing underground utilities during excavation and backfill operations.
• Follow applicable NV Energy requirements when performing work involving NV Energy gas facilities.
• Follow company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, utility standards, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
• Work safely around gas, water, electric, communications, and other underground utility facilities.
• Complete equipment inspections and promptly report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, or utility damage.
• Maintain required training, certifications, operator qualification cards, and credentials.
• Maintain a safe and organized job site.
• Perform other utility construction and backfill duties within the employee’s training and qualifications.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Previous construction, excavation, underground utility, backfill, or heavy equipment operation experience preferred.
• Ability to safely operate assigned construction equipment after completing required training and authorization.
• Ability to complete and maintain required company and utility training and qualifications.
• Must obtain and maintain applicable NV Energy operator qualifications and safety credentials when required for assigned work.
• Ability to follow construction plans, utility markings, safety procedures, and instructions from supervisors and utility inspectors.
• Ability to safely work around underground utilities, heavy equipment, and active construction sites.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record if driving is required.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and job-site conditions.
• Must be able to report to assigned project locations when accepting an assignment.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This position may require standing and walking for extended periods; working on uneven terrain; bending, kneeling, climbing, pushing, pulling, and lifting; and entering and exiting construction equipment.

Work may be performed around heavy equipment, trenches, traffic, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

On-Call / As-Needed Employment Status

This is an on-call, as-needed position without a regularly scheduled or guaranteed number of work hours.

Assignments depend on available projects, customer requirements, and operational needs. There may be periods when no work is available. No minimum number of hours, days, projects, or assignments is guaranteed.

The employee will remain in on-call status between assignments and may be contacted when qualified work becomes available. When possible, the Company will provide the anticipated job location, schedule, and expected duration. The employee may accept assignments based on availability and the staffing and qualification requirements of the project.

Required training, certifications, and operator qualifications are conditions of eligibility for applicable assignments; they do not guarantee future work or a minimum number of hours.

Employees will be paid for all hours worked and required compensable training in accordance with applicable wage-and-hour requirements.
