We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Chemist to join our research team on a part-time basis to support experimental work for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant proposal. This is a fast-paced opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on chemical oxygen generation systems with applications ranging from underwater breathing systems and PEM fuel cells to emergency medical oxygen, firefighting, mine rescue, spacecraft life support, and battlefield casualty care.

Project Overview

Performance of the oxygen-generating reaction using disparate water sources, including seawater — expanding potential use to hospitals, emergency responders, spacecraft, and battlefield medicine.

The research builds on patented chemical oxygen generator technology that produces oxygen from low-cost, water-soluble powders (sodium percarbonate, potassium iodide, and sodium sulfate decahydrate) via a controlled peroxide-decomposition reaction. 

Responsibilities

  • Design and manage bench-scale experiments measuring oxygen generation volume and reaction temperature profiles for multiple chemical formulations and solvent systems.
  • Prepare and characterize gelled oxygen-generating mixtures (MnO₂ + polyacrylamide) and evaluate gel stability/anti-sedimentation performance.
  • Maintain accurate lab records, collect and organize experimental data, and support preliminary data analysis for inclusion in the SBIR proposal.
  • Assist in drafting technical content, figures, and preliminary results sections related to experimental methodology and findings.
  • Collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator under tight timelines to meet the proposal submission deadline.


Qualifications

  • Ph.D. (preferred) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with aqueous solution chemistry; experience with peroxide chemistry, oxidation-reduction reactions, or gas-evolution reactions is a strong plus.
  • Familiarity with gel/rheology characterization (e.g., polymer-based gellants such as polyacrylamide) is desirable but not required.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and deliver results under a compressed schedule.
  • Strong written communication skills for documenting methods and results.
  • Available to begin work immediately and commit part-time hours through the proposal deadline (August 12, 2026), with potential for funded research if the grant is awarded.
