The Digital Design & Social Media Intern will serve as a creative coin of 8 Cents in a Jar, helping bring our mission, programs, and impact to life through strong visuals and storytelling. This role creates engaging digital content, supports our social media presence, and helps tell the stories of the students, families, partners, and communities we serve. We’re looking for someone who can turn ideas into content that connects, makes financial education feel relevant, and inspires people to take action.
If you enjoy storytelling and dabbling in design, then you’ll love to:
Mission, Marketing & Creative Support
- Become familiar with our mission, programs, and Economic Succession approach and understand how your creative work contributes to economic mobility across Central Florida.
- Work directly with the team on storytelling, communications, marketing, community outreach, and special creative projects.
- Learn the goals and direction of our programs and translate what is happening behind the scenes into content people can understand, connect with, and share.
- Bring fresh ideas to the table and help us think creatively about how we communicate financial education, economic mobility, and our impact.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while staying organized and adaptable in an ever-changing nonprofit environment.
Digital Design & Marketing
- Design engaging graphics, flyers, presentations, program materials, social media content, and other branded assets using Canva and other creative tools.
- Support digital marketing campaigns across email, social media, web, and other platforms to reach students, families, volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters.
- Create and edit short-form videos, Reels, graphics, photos, and other visual content for social media, programs, events, and campaigns.
- Help maintain a consistent 8 Cents in a Jar look, feel, voice, and brand across digital and printed materials.
- Organize photos, videos, templates, graphics, and other creative assets so great content can be easily found and repurposed.
- Support updates to website and digital content as needed.
Social Media & Creative Content
- Help develop and execute social media strategies that increase awareness, engagement, and growth.
- Schedule and publish regular program updates, stories, announcements, partner highlights, impact moments, and success stories.
- Help plan and lead content days, including developing storyboards and shot lists so we capture the content we actually need.
- Attend select programs and events to capture photos, videos, interviews, behind-the-scenes moments, and participant experiences.
- Develop creative campaigns that make financial education and Economic Succession relevant, relatable, and shareable.
- Monitor social media engagement and basic performance metrics to understand what is connecting with our audiences and inform future content.
- Stay current on digital trends and bring ideas for how 8 Cents in a Jar can use them authentically rather than simply following what everyone else is doing.
Storytelling & Communications
- Turn program experiences, interviews, testimonials, participant accomplishments, partnerships, and impact data into compelling stories.
- Write and schedule newsletters, social media captions, stakeholder communications, and other short-form content.
- Help develop student, family, alumni, volunteer, partner, and donor stories that demonstrate the impact of our work.
- Work with program staff to identify the stories worth telling and gather the information needed to tell them well.
- Repurpose strong stories across multiple platforms so one great moment can become a social post, email, graphic, video, website feature, or impact story.
- Protect the dignity and privacy of the people we serve by following organizational expectations for consent, photography, storytelling, and participant information.
Our Must-Haves Include:
- Currently enrolled in a college or university program, preferably in Marketing, Communications, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Public Relations, or a related field preferred, but not required at all.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A creative eye and willingness to experiment with storytelling, design, video, and digital content.
- Familiarity with major social media platforms and how content differs across them.
- Experience with creative and digital tools such as Canva, Affinity, Adobe Creative Suite, Mailchimp, Wix, or similar platforms. You don't have to know them all.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating with a small, fast-moving team.
- Comfortable receiving feedback, making revisions, and learning as you go.
- Passion for financial education, economic mobility, youth development, community impact, or simply using your creative talents to do some good.
You Receive:
- $16.80 per hour. And yes, if you have a creative project you're passionate about that connects to personal finance or our mission, bring it to us. With approval from the Executive Director, we may be able to fund it.
- You work from home, and we work from home. You must reside in Central Florida and have reliable transportation for select programs, events, and content days. Some may happen on evenings or weekends, but don't worry, you'll have input on the schedule.
- Real work for your portfolio. You'll have opportunities to create content, campaigns, designs, and stories that are actually used by the organization.
- Access to great financial resources. Listen, we talk about money, so your money has got to be right, or at least you need the desire to make it right...for you.
- Room to create. We have a brand and a mission, but we're not looking for someone to simply copy and paste. We want your ideas, your creativity, and your perspective.
