Description

Fractional CFO — Whalebone

Coastal apparel brand • Montauk & Newport • Remote-friendly, part-time/fractional

Who we are

Whalebone is a coastal lifestyle apparel brand born on the beaches of Montauk in 2010, now with flagship stores in Montauk and Newport and a growing e-commerce business serving customers from Maine to Malibu. We're a small, scrappy team mid-growth — actively fundraising, expanding our product drops, and building toward a much bigger version of this brand over the next few years. We need a finance partner who can bring order and foresight to a business that moves fast and seasonally.

The role

We're looking for a fractional CFO who treats cash flow like a living, breathing thing — not a quarterly exercise. This isn't a "check in once a month" role. We need someone who will:

  • Build and maintain a weekly-updated cash flow model — what's coming in, what's going out, what's coming due, no surprises
  • Own the P&L and keep it clean, current, and useful for real decision-making
  • Build financial models and forecasts to support our active fundraise, support growth planning, and help us size and time large inventory purchase orders (we run on seasonal production cycles with real lead times and real cash implications)
  • Translate the numbers into plain-English guidance for a founder team that wants to make smart calls fast, not decode a spreadsheet
  • Get comfortable with the realities of a seasonal apparel business — inventory timing, factory payment terms, peak-season cash crunches, and the ebbs and flows that come with it

What you bring

  • Experience with small consumer/apparel/CPG brands, ideally in the $1M–$5M range actively working to scale
  • Real, hands-on comfort building cash flow models — not just reviewing them
  • Fundraise experience (SAFEs, priced rounds, investor reporting) is a strong plus
  • S-Corp familiarity and comfort working alongside outside tax/accounting support
  • Shopify and Gusto experience a plus
  • Someone who can work independently, communicate clearly, and flag problems before they become emergencies

Details

  • Fractional/part-time, cadence to be discussed based on fit
  • Remote-friendly, with occasional connection to our Montauk/Newport teams
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and scope
