About Martin Luther Tower, Inc. Located in the heart of San Francisco’s Cathedral Hill neighborhood, St. Mark’s Square is an intergenerational community built for service, connection and living. The square began with St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, founded in 1849, and grew in size and scope into a larger community in the late 1960s when the church decided to help redevelop its declining neighborhood. The Church is designated as a San Francisco Landmark, recognized for its historical and architectural significance. Now St. Mark’s Square operates an affordable senior living facility (Martin Luther Tower) onsite and has plans for adding more senior and family housing in the coming few years. The Square’s vision is to: envision a future where people of all ages and backgrounds thrive in a vibrant, intergenerational community rooted in compassion, dignity, and inclusivity. Through innovative, service-enriched housing and holistic support, we aspire to create a model of sustainable, affordable living that fosters connection, well-being, and opportunity for generations to come.
